Genesis - revisited!
On February 17th a small group of us went to the Civico to watch a cover band of the born in the 70s band Genesis. The Watch is an Italian outfit who have been working on perfecting the sounds and atmosphere distilled by the original group, and boy have they nailed it! It was a memorable concert, in a packed theatre of true fans. Thanks to Giorgio Francheschini for the idea!
Bookcrossing English Link February 11, 2025
This time we did Bookcrossing with a Twist. Everyone was forewarned to bring along a book without letting slip to the others what they had picked. All our paperbacks (and one hardback) were slipped into a mystery box until we were all ready, then everyone had to select one book at random, just as long as it wasn’t their own! Now for the fun part…. After just a few bewildering seconds flicking through the pages, glancing at the reviews on the dustcover, clocking a dedication or opening quotation, we had to start talking up the unknown book in our hands to everyone else in the group, answering any questions fired at us without batting an eyelash. To be perfectly honest I think we can all give ourselves a pat on the back; what an accomplished pack of liars we are! We seamlessly invented complex characters on the spot, hinted at sumptuous locations, purple passages, hair-raising adventures, intricately woven plots and devastating twists of fate in the closing chapter. We professed to knowing inside-out the life and works of our pet authors, and wholeheartedly assured our friends that they would not regret it if they gave our books a go themselves. We promised them sleepless nights engrossed in vicarious passions, “I simply couldn’t put it down”, “I tore through the pages” (not literally, of course, that would be a cardinal sin for a bookworm), “it’s something that will haunt you long after you read the last lines”. At the end of the evening, we all fessed up, and the actual guardian of each printed companion revealed the true nature of the author, the book, its characters and how he or she came to read it. Many of us went home with a different book to sample, perhaps a little wistful to realise that the one we had invented, championed and swiftly come to love had never in fact been penned. But then, you know as well as I do that any book can only ever come to life when someone starts to thumb through its pages; the reader takes on the role of sorcerer, as the magic begins.
